Before Leaving

  • Service: Get your vehicle serviced to prevent breakdowns and follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Check for recalls: The NHTSA recommends its VIN look-up tool to learn if your vehicle has any recalls which have not been repaired by going to gov/Recalls. You can also enroll in the NHTSA recall alert program at NHTSA.gov/Alerts.
  • Review your vehicle safety checklist:
    • Tires should be properly inflated and not have uneven or excessive wear.
    • Lights, including headlights, brake lights, turn signals, interior lights and trailer lights all need to be in good working order.
    • The cooling system should be checked for coolant level and color. If it is clear, rusty or has particles floating in it, it is time to have the system flushed and refilled.
    • The fuel tank should be full.
    • Belts, hoses and wiper blades should show no signs of wear.
    • The air conditioning system should work properly.
    • The floor mats should be properly installed so as not to interfere with a driver’s operation of the accelerator or brake pedal.

    • Cell phone and charger
    • First aid kit
    • Flashlight
    • Flares and a white flag
    • Jumper cables
