Motorcycle Fatalities: Florida Continues to Rank High Over Other States

May 12, 2016 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

A Tampa Bay Tribune article, recently shed some light on a very serious issue in Florida -- motorcycle fatalities. Bike Week in Daytona has come and gone, but it is still important to reflect on a problem that has a profound effect on the victims, their families and state and federal highway authorities.

In fact, according to the Tribune, 2016 is well on the way to being a deadly year for motorcyclists in the Tampa Bay area and elsewhere throughout Florida. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in a May 2015 fact sheet, compiled some statistics based on 2013 data that show that Florida leads the rest of the nation in motorcycle deaths.

A Closer Look at the Problem

A startling statistic noted by the NHTSA relates to the number of motorcyclists who died in 2013 stemming from some sort of alcohol impairment. Specifically, the Administration noted that during that year, motorcyclists who were killed in crashes made up the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired drivers over drivers of other types of vehicles, with motorcycles accounting for 27 percent of fatal crashes, passenger vehicles accounting for 23 percent, light trucks accounting for 21 percent and large trucks accounting for 2 percent.

Even more concerning is that 40 percent of motorcyclists who died in 2013 in single-vehicle crashes were impaired by alcohol. NHTSA stats show that of the 467 motorcyclists who lost their lives in Florida due to alcohol impairment, 29 percent of those individuals had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 percent or greater and 34 percent of them had BACs of .01 percent or higher.
