National Safety Month June 2018 - Drive Safely

June 20, 2018 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

“The National Safety Council (NSC) designates June each year as ‘National Safety Month’ with a different emphasis each week. Driving safety, in which NSC includes seat belt use, distracted driving and drowsy driving, is an important topic for week four. We at Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. would like to share some of the NSC information here and want to take this time to remind drivers to drive safely, undistracted and alert,” said Fort Myers Car Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey.

Seat Belts – Buckle Up Every Ride

National Safety Month June 2018 - Drive Safely - Spivey LawThe NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) is committed to convincing U.S. drivers to always buckle up – every trip, every time. The agency feels that even though there are endless new vehicle safety technologies that come to market each year, the seat belt technology remains constant and is the basic foundation of safer driving. In 2015 alone, seat belts saved 13,941 lives; 2,804 additional lives could have been saved if everyone buckled up.

Distracted Driving – Cell Phones

The Department of Transportation (DOT) says that every year in the U.S. almost a half million people are injured or killed in traffic accidents which are attributed to a combination of texting and driving. This is a completely avoidable happening. DOT reports the latest statistics as of 2018 showed that 3,477 people died, and 391,000 more were injured in motor vehicle crashes caused by distracted drivers who were texting or using cell phones.

69 percent of U.S. drivers between the ages of 18 and 64 admitted to using cell phones while driving during one month of surveying. Experts say this puts the U.S. in first place when it comes to similar accidents in other countries.

Drowsy Driving

“Drowsy driving is a bigger traffic safety issue than federal estimates show,” David Yang, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety executive director, said in a February 8, 2018 press release. “Drivers who don’t get enough sleep are putting everyone on the road at risk. By conducting an in-depth analysis using video of everyday drivers, we can now better assess if a driver was fatigued in the moments leading up to a crash.”

Foundation findings indicate drowsiness was a factor in 9.5 percent of all crashes and 10.8 percent of crashes resulting in significant property damage; markedly higher than the 1 percent to 2 percent federal agency estimate.

“If you or a loved one is injured in a vehicle accident, our experienced team of attorneys is available to assist you. There are no costs or attorney fees unless we make a monetary recovery for you,” said Attorney Spivey.
