NAFMP North American Fatigue Management Program Website

In partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration,  (FMCSA), Transport Canada (TC), American Transportation Research Institute and other Canadian agencies, a new driver fatigue management website has been created - The North American Fatigue Management Program (NAFMP) website.  This website is designed to be voluntary and to compliment federal truck driver service hours (HOS) regulations.

In announcing this website Friday, July 19, 2013, Anne S. Ferro, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administrator, said, "We can help save lives and prevent crashes on our roads by providing drivers and companies with educational tools, like those contained in the North American Fatigue Management Program website."

This website, NAFMP,  is an interactive, web-based training and developmental program on fatigue for commercial truck and bus drivers, and carriers covering the following:

      • Information on how to develop a corporate culture that facilitates reduced driver fatigue.
      • Fatigue management education for drivers, drivers' families, carrier executives and managers, shippers/receivers and dispatchers.
      • Information on sleep disorders, screening and treatment.
      • Driver and trip scheduling information.
      • Information on fatigue management technologies.

NAFMP plans to assist in mitigating fatigue by:

      • Increasing the awareness of the dangers of driving drowsy or fatigued.
      • Training and educating on motor carrier best practices and how drivers can better manage fatigue.
      • Identifying sleep disorders and how medical intervention and technology support can help.
      • Training on how to monitor fatigue.
      • Increasing awareness of the critical factors that add to the dangers of fatigue and "sleep debt" (the number of continuous hours of being awake in a 24-hour period).

Florida Truck and Motor Coach Accident Lawyer, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. said, "The National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) found that 36% of the fatalities occurring in 16 motor coach crashes were the result of driver fatigue.  The North American Fatigue Management Program website is a good tool for commercial drivers, their families, executives of commercial trucking and bus companies, including safety managers, dispatchers and shippers in recognizing and preventing driver-fatigue crashes."
