Risk of Motorcycle Accidents Highest at Intersections

August 16, 2019 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

On July 5, 2019, one man died as the result of a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Three Oaks Parkway and Roundstone Circle, south of Alico Road. A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said the motorcyclist was heading northbound on Three Oaks and an SUV was making a left turn out of a development: “The SUV pulled out in front of the motorcyclist causing the motorcyclist to clip the rear driver’s side of the car, falling off the motorcycle and sliding down the road.”

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) sponsored a motorcycle naturalistic study, Factors that Increase and Decrease Motorcyclist Crash Risk, which was conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).  VTTI used video and kinematic data to investigate 100 motorcycle riders, on their own bikes, over a period of 2 months to 2 years per rider.

The final participant group consisted of 78 male and 22 female participants, ranging in age from 21 years to 79 years. Participant motorcycle types included cruising (41), touring (38), and sport (21). Seventeen of the participants were from Florida.

The study investigated safe riding and crashes in natural riding. A paper was issued at the conclusion of the study which identified the factors that increased and decreased the risk for riders based on observed crashes and near-crashes.

The results showed there were 30 crashes and 122 near-crashes. Fifty-five of the participants experienced at least one event. Risk of Motorcycle Accidents Highest at Intersections - Spivey Law

MSF said, “Discovery of the factors that increase the risk of motorcycle crashes (and near-crashes) is useful in understanding how these events occur during everyday riding, and also provides opportunities to supplement or improve rider training. In this study, 65 percent of the participants reported that they have passed at least one rider training course, whereas the national average as of 2014 was 44 percent, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Therefore the study sample is at least as well-trained as the overall population.”

The largest risk of a motorcycle accident was at an uncontrolled intersection where there was no signal or other signage. The study found that “Although the majority are ‘typical’ intersection-related cases, such as various types of conflicts with other vehicles intending to turn at the intersection, there are also some unique situations such as riders who are attempting to make a U-turn or maneuver down an unpaved, non-maintained roadway toward an intersection.”
