Speeding and Aggressive Driving Causes Accidents

October 17, 2018 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

When traveling on Southwest Florida roadways, one encounters speeding and aggressive drivers every day. These drivers cause accidents that affect all of us.

In its 2018 Highway Safety Plan, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) said the chances of dying in a crash doubles for every 10 miles per hour (mph) a vehicle travels above 50 mph. When speeding, a driver has a reduced time to react to dangerous situations and the risk of impact and death in a crash increases.

Speeding and Aggressive Driving Causes Accidents - Spivey LawThe National Safety Council (NSC) calculates that if a car is traveling at 30 mph and accelerates to 60 mph, the amount of energy upon impact is four times greater. There are three types of collisions that are part of a crash:

  • The vehicle collision when the vehicle hits another vehicle or object.
  • The human collision when the people in the vehicle hit the interior of the vehicles or another occupant.
  • The internal collision when organs in the body collide with the body’s skeleton or other organs, according to NSC.

A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatal Accident Report found that aggressive driving played a role in 56 percent of fatal crashes. In 2016, speeding was a contributing factor in 27 percent of all fatal crashes, and 10,111 lives were lost as the result of speeding.

Speeding and aggressive driving accidents happened when the following driver actions occurred:

  • Following improperly
  • Improper or erratic lane changing
  • Illegal driving on road shoulder, in ditch, or on sidewalk or median
  • Passing where prohibited
  • Operating a vehicle in an erratic, reckless, careless, or negligent manner or suddenly changing speeds
  • Failure to yield right of way
  • Failure to obey traffic signs, traffic control devices, or traffic officers
  • Failure to observe safety zone traffic laws
  • Failure to observe warnings or instructions on vehicles displaying them
  • Failure to signal
  • Driving too fast for conditions or in excess of posted speed limit
  • Racing
  • Making an improper turn
