Stem Cells and Spinal Cord Injuries

January 28, 2016 | Category: | Share

Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are among the most life-changing injuries a person can experience because there are no effective treatments to restore function that is lost when the spine sustains damage. However, stem cell therapy is a developing area of medical science, and there is hope that stem cell therapy could change the field of spinal cord injury treatment.  Just recently, Reuters reported that one company conducting research into experimental stem cell therapy was able to provide some improvement in functioning and strength in the limbs of spinal cord injury victims.

There is still a long way to go in developing the most effective treatments possible, and there is often a significant financial cost associated with trying the latest medical treatments.  That being the case, victims of spinal cord injuries who are hurt because of wrongdoing or negligence must make sure that they do everything possible to obtain enough compensation after their injuries so they are not excluded from trying effective medical treatments due to financial cost.

Randall Spivey and his team of Ft. Myers personal injury attorneys can help victims develop estimates of ongoing medical expenditures and help victims who are making damage claims to provide proof of the amount of compensation needed.  Attorneys can assist victims and their families both in pursuing negotiated settlements or in pursuing civil claims after spinal cord injuries occur.

Promising New Research Into Spinal Cord Injuries Could Mean Better Treatments in the Future

Many companies specializing in stem cell therapy are focused on finding new ways to improve mobility and quality of life for SCI victims.  Reuters reported on the research currently being conducted by one company, which has been modifying stem cells derived from tissue so the cells can multiply into nerves.  The company is in the middle of a study to determine the effectiveness of their new medical breakthrough.

Using two different scales to measure improvement at the mid-point of the study, it was determined that limb strength and limb function in spinal cord injury victims had both improved due to the stem cell treatment. This latest report on the effectiveness of the stem cells in improving limb function is the second recent report (the first report came from a different company conducting similar testing).

If stem cell researchers are finding that the work they are doing is yielding results, this is great news for SCI patients who may soon have new treatment options on the horizon.  Unfortunately, health insurers do not always cover costs of experimental or new treatments, and these treatments are typically too expensive to be paid for out-of-pocket.

Victims who have already settled or received compensation for spinal cord injury cases cannot go back and make additional claims for more money just because there are new medical options that become available.  This is why it is so important to understand the full extent of medical costs and other damages for which you should be compensated when you make your injury claim after suffering a spinal injury.

When you work with experienced personal injury attorneys, you can make a compelling case during settlement negotiations or litigation in order to maximize the chances of getting enough money to provide for care in the future.  Call the Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. as soon as possible after you or someone you love sustains a spinal cord injury due to a person or company's negligence so you can begin pursuing a civil claim for compensation.
