10 Safety Tips for Memorial Day 2021

May 19, 2021 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

10 Safety Tips for Memorial Day 2021 - Spivey LawMemorial Day was originally called Decoration Day because it was the day people decorated the graves of fallen Union and Confederate Civil War soldiers with flags. After World War I, the holiday was expanded to honor fallen soldiers for all wars. More than 1 million men and women who died in military service are honored on Memorial Day. People visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each gravesite in national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance will take place at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day.

“Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. thanks all those who served, or are serving, our country in the armed forces, and particularly remember and thank those who have paid the ultimate price,” said Fort Myers Accident Attorney Randall Spivey.

In 2021, Memorial Day is observed on May 31st, the last Monday in May. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports the holiday is always a 3.25-day weekend extending from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 31st.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial beginning of the summer season, and many will be enjoying the time with family and friends.

CBS News reports that drivers and passengers are four times more likely to die in a traffic accident over Memorial Day weekend than on a regular weekend.

If you plan to be on the roads, the American Red Cross recommends the following driving safety tips:

  1. Be well-rested and alert. Use your seat belts; observe speed limits, and follow the rules of the road.
  2. If you plan on drinking alcohol, designate a driver who won’t drink.
  3. Give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
  4. Use caution in work zones. There are a lot of construction projects underway on the highways.
  5. Don’t follow other vehicles too closely.
  6. Make frequent stops.
  7. Clean your vehicle’s lights and windows to help you see, especially at night. Turn your headlights on as dusk approaches, or during inclement weather. Don’t overdrive your headlights.
  8. Don’t let your vehicle’s gas tank get too low. If you have car trouble, pull as far as possible off the highway.
  9. Carry a Disaster Supplies Kit in your trunk.
  10. Let someone know where you are going, your route and when you expect to get there. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route.
