2013 Best & Worst Booster Seats for Children

November 22, 2013 | Category: Child Injuries | Share

On Thursday, November 7, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) issued its list of this year's best and worst booster seats for children.  More than any other year, the IIHS rated 5 seats "Good Bet" and 58 seats "Best Bet".  Booster seats are recommended so that seat belts fit properly.  Experts recommend that booster seats be used until children reach the height of 4'9".  This is the height at which seat belts were designed to fit properly.

Here are the IIHS categories:

  • Best Bets - Seats that provide good belt fit for a typical 4 to 8 year-old in almost any car, minivan or SUV.
  • Good Bets - Seats that provide acceptable belt fit in most cars, minivans or SUVs.
  • Not recommended:  Seats which don't provide good belt fit and should be avoided.
  • Check fit: Booster seats that IIHS has tested that have varied results depending on child size and vehicle model.  This designation appears on some models in the "Search by brand" section.

For safety reasons, the IIHS says that both the lap and shoulder belts must fit correctly.  Here is a link to the IIHS video on booster seats along with images below from the IIHS website:  IIHS Video Link
