Fort Myers pedestrian injury attorney recognizes that more and more pedestrians are injured or killed every year because of driver negligence.

According to Smart Growth America’s 2020 Dangerous by Design, 2018 was the deadliest on record for pedestrians. U.S. drivers struck and killed 6,283 people. Between 2009 and 2018, traffic deaths among motor vehicle occupants declined by 1 percent, but over the same decade traffic deaths among people walking increased by 53 percent.

Smart Growth America examines the most dangerous states for pedestrians, according to Fort Myers pedestrian injury attorney.

7 Most Common Florida Pedestrian Accidents - Spivey Law“Every two years, Smart Growth America releases Dangerous by Design, a national report that explores the pedestrian safety crisis. In this interim update, we re-examined the top 20 most dangerous states for people walking over the past decade based on our Pedestrian Danger Index, a metric that measures deadliness for people walking, controlling for the size of the population and the share of people who walk to work. Although rankings within the top 20 states shifted slightly, in 2020 the same states comprise the top 10 and top 20 most dangerous places for people walking compared to our Dangerous by Design 2019 report,” says Smart Growth America.

Authorities say there are seven common Florida pedestrian accident causes:

  1. Rolling stops or failure to stop at an intersection
  2. Reckless driving
  3. Speeding
  4. Drunk driving
  5. Distracted driving
  6. Passing school buses
  7. School zone accidents

Lee County has seen its share of pedestrian deaths in 2020, which include:

  • A 56-year-old Bonita Springs woman who was killed when struck by an SUV while she was crossing U.S.41 in Estero, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
  • In Lehigh Acres, the Florida Highway Patrol and Lee County deputies responded to a crash that killed a 54-year-old woman as she attempted to cross the street. The driver was a 27-year-old woman.
