DUI Can Cost Drunk Drivers Big Time!

September 27, 2012 | Category: DUI Accidents | Share

Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. in Ft. Myers, FL represents individuals, family members or friends who have been the victims of car accidents involving drunk drivers.

Attorney Spivey says, "If you know people who inappropriately drink and drive, their behavior is costly.  It's costly in many ways, not the least of which are the potential of bodily injury or death. "

DUI drivers should think about :

1.  What's the cost of their reputations as their names and "mug" shots are displayed for everyone to see, including  present or future employers?  Even first-time DUI convictions remain on  Florida driving records for 75 years.

2.  What's the cost in their time?

For first-time DUI convictions the State of Florida penalties are:

      • Community Service - 50 hours
      • Probation - Up to 1 year
      • Imprisonment -  Up to 6 months
      • Imprisonment with BAL (blood alcohol) of 0.08 or higher with a minor in the vehicle - Up to 9 months
      • License Revocation - Minimum of 180 days
      • DUI School - 12 hours

3.  What's the cost in $$$?

In Florida the costs can be well beyond the potential fines of $500 to $1,000 for a first offense.  Factor in towing, bail fees, court-mandated classes, vehicle insurance rate increases, legal fees, restitution payments, wrecked vehicle payments and more.

Randall Spivey has obtained well over $60,000,000 in Settlements and Verdicts for his clients who suffered or died because of drunk drivers.

According to Drinking and Driving - Prevention, Education, Assistance organization in  The Financial Truth of DUI,  drivers should "Consider the consequences of a DUI arrest compared to the cost of ANY available alternative.  They could take a limo and drink champagne all the way to the fanciest hotel in town and still not spend as much as they would for a DUI."
