Aggressive Driving and Speeding Can Cause Road Fatalities

February 4, 2013 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

There's no question, aggressive driving and speeding cause accidents.  According to the Governor's Highway Safety Association (GHSA), one third of all fatalities on the nation's roads are caused by speeding and aggressive driving.  GHSA's survey reported nearly 90% of drivers view aggressive driving as a very serious or somewhat serious threat to their own safety.

The State of Florida defines aggressive driving as committing two or more of the following acts simultaneously:

  1. Exceeding the posted speed.
  2. Unsafely or improperly changing lanes.
  3. Following another vehicle too closely.
  4. Failing to yield the right-of-way.
  5. Improperly passing.
  6. Violating traffic control and signal devices.

According to safety.transportation.org, Lee County, Florida, has had one of the highest fatal automobile-accident rates in Florida. Many of the crashes appeared to have been caused by aggressive driving. As a result the Lee County Sheriff's Department developed an aggressive driving program to help reduce the number of fatal crashes. They also planned to continue an effective relationship with the broadcast media.

In 2011 there were nearly 19,000 traffic citations issued by the Collier County Sheriff's Office, of which 295 involved aggressive driving. (NaplesNews.com Feb. 25, 2012)

The Southwest Florida Safety Council regularly offers an 8-hour classroom course

"Aggressive Driver Improvement" which is available for everyone as well as being court-ordered under certain circumstances.

To help prevent accidents the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety offers a quiz - Are You An Aggressive Driver?  This "driver stress profile" measures the driver's potential hostility on the road.

"Our Florida Accident Team sees first-hand the results of crashes caused by aggressive driving and speeding.   Taking the AAA quiz may assist drivers in recognizing the stress profile and making changes in their driving habits." says Attorney Randall Spivey, Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.
