Alcohol - How Much Is Too Much?

December 3, 2014 | Category: DUI Accidents | Share

"As we are in the holiday season, many people will be enjoying parties. These parties may be at home, in the office, in restaurants and other social gathering places.  Before going to any party and partaking of alcoholic beverages, it is important to think about the question, How much is too much?," says Florida Hurt By Drunk Driver Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.

Do you know how much drinking is too much for you? According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse (NIAAA), "...it could mean drinking too much at one time, drinking too often, or both."

The NIAAA provides information on its website, Rethinking Drinking - Alcohol and Your Health, regarding:

  1. What counts as a drink?
  2. What are risky drinking patterns?

What Counts as a drink?

In the U.S. the NIAAA says that a "standard" drink is any drink that contains about 0.6 fluid ounces, or 14 grams of pure alcohol. Each of the below contains about the same amount of alcohol and is considered a single drink:

As not all drinks are "standard" drinks, NIAAA recommends checking beverage labels and/or using one of the calculators on their website: Calculator The NIAAA also provides a chart of the number of standard drinks in different sized containers on the same website.

What are risky drinking patterns?

Risky drinking patterns relate to how many drinks are consumed each day/week.  To review risky drinking patterns, NIAAA has a two-question survey at Survey .

In addition to the above, the NIAAA provides further information and self-help strategies.

Drinking and driving can be a lethal combination. According to MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers) in 2012 (latest available statistics), 10,332 people in the U. S. were killed in drunk-driving crashes; one every 51 minutes, and one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime. MADD reports that almost every 90 seconds, a person is injured in a drunk driving crash.  Before his/her first arrest, the average drunk driver has driven drunk at least 80 times.

Between November 10 and November 16, 2014 the Lee County Sheriff's Office reported eighteen DUI arrests.

"Drinking and driving can be a lethal combination. The affects from DUI accidents last long after the party is over. If you are the host of a party whether it is an office party, at home or in a restaurant, be responsible for your guests. Take action. Do not let anyone leave and drive after drinking," says Attorney Spivey.
