Back to School Traffic Congestion Can Cause Accidents

August 28, 2019 | Category: Child Injuries | Share

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports there were more than 22 million registered drivers in 2016. Americans are driving cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles more than ever and have spent 2.2 percent more time driving in 2016 than in 2015.

Back to School Traffic Congestion Can Cause Accidents - Spivey LawSchool is open and traffic congestion around school zones has increased. This congestion, along with road construction projects in some school zones, is causing more vehicles to use fewer lanes.

The City of Cape Coral released a statement about an overdue road construction project around the Christa McAuliffe Charter Elementary School.  Since school started on August 12, traffic around the elementary school can be difficult. Authorities say, “It has been a race against the clock ever since the contractor for the city’s North Utilities Extension Project Contract fell behind schedule.” The City of Cape Coral says it is working on a recovery plan to have the project back on schedule, finishing in the summer of 2020.

“Unsafe behaviors behind the wheel, combined with road congestion and road construction projects, are a recipe for disaster. Drivers need to stay calm and alert whenever driving in Southwest Florida school zones,” said Cape Coral Personal Injury Lawyer Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) provides the following facts on work zone accidents:

  • Work zone crashes, during the past 5 years, caused more than 4,400 deaths and 200,000 injuries.
  • Drivers are the most frequent fatalities in work zone crashes.
  • Most work zone fatalities involve working-age adults.
  • Rear-end crashes (running into the rear of a slowing or stopping vehicle) are the most common type of work zone crash.
  • Fatal work zone crashes occur most often in summer and fall.
  • The majority of fatal work zone crashes occurred on roads with speed limits greater than 50 mph.
