Florida with its warm weather and beautiful scenery has always been a Mecca for motorcyclists. These motorcyclists can travel as fast as other drivers, and are required to obey the same traffic laws. However, they are different as anyone traveling on the roads with them knows. Motorcycles have lower visibility, less stability and less protection than four-wheeled vehicles.

Alcohol is a powerful, mood-altering drug, according to NIAAA. It not only affects the mind and body in unpredictable ways, but teens lack the judgment and coping skills to handle alcohol wisely. It does not have to be difficult to talk to teens about alcohol abuse.

Even though older drivers most often are the safest drivers because they are more likely to wear seatbelts and less likely to speed or drink and drive, they are more likely, if involved in an accident, to suffer serious injuries and be killed. By the time a senior driver reaches his or her 70s, according to the Minnesota Times Standard, the risk typically starts to increase because of a decline in reflexes, alertness and other factors.

The Florida DHSMV is reminding motorists throughout the month of April to not drive distracted in its program “Focus on Driving Florida.” The numbers are significant. In 2015, DHSMV reports that there were more than 45,700 distracted driving crashes in Florida resulting in more than 39,000 injuries and more than 200 fatalities.

According to an NBC-2 report by Levi Ismail on Sunday, April 3, motorcycles account for 7 percent of all vehicles on our roads, but disproportionately make up 19 percent of annual fatalities. FHP reports that at least one motorcycle rider dies each day in Florida.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) accounts for the disability of an estimated 5.3 million Americans with the highest rate of injury occurring between the ages of 15 and 24. Those under the age of 5 and over the age of 75 are also at high risk, according to the International Brain Injury Association (IBIA).
