An estimated 3 million commercial truck and bus drivers are covered under a new government rule, announced December 10, 2015, requiring them to electronically record their driving hours. This new rule was adopted to enforce regulations to help prevent driver fatigue.
The NHTSA (National Traffic Safety Administration) published a final rule which would add a new Federal vehicle safety standard (No. 136) requiring electronic stability control systems (ESC) for heavy vehicles.
Although only four percent of vehicles on the road are trucks, large trucks account for 11 percent of bicycle crash deaths nationwide, according to the Legal Examiner. Trucks also account for a large portion of fatal motor vehicle crashes involving people in passenger cars.
On September 18, 2015 Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys P.A. filed a wrongful death civil action on behalf of the widow of Ronald Gravel, the victim of the July 20, 2015 DUI pool hall traffic crash. DUI Driver NBC2 reported November 5, 2015 that there were new details regarding the driver who smashed his truck into a Cape Coral Pool Hall.
A wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Texas in August 2015 on behalf of the family of 54-year-old Kathryn Dodgen, according to the Houston Press. In 2014 as Kathy approached an intersection, a 40-foot-long trailer pulled out from a driveway into the middle of the road. It was overcast, and Kathy did not see the trailer's thin reflector strips. She did not have time to break until her car was headed straight under the trailer.
Truck drivers are retiring faster than they are being replaced, and there is a very real shortage of commercial truck drivers that is growing worse by the year. Trucks move the bulk of goods throughout the U.S., and current drivers are limited in the number of hours they can drive per day and per week. To make sure that goods can be moved as needed, there must be more truck drivers.
On July 31, 2015, a one-year-old Fort Myers girl was injured when a truck driven by a relative backed over her arm. NBC2 reported that the truck driver was backing his truck out of the driveway when the girl ran behind the truck and fell while he was backing up.

The Washington Post recently reported that Wal-Mart and Tracy Morgan have reached a settlement with respect to the 2014 crash that involved one of the store’s 18-wheelers and the comedian’s limo bus. The accident severely injured Morgan and two other passengers and killed a fellow comedian. The settlement terms have not been revealed; however, Morgan has publicly stated that Wal-Mart “did right” by him, his family and his associates’ families as well.
