Cruise Ship Personal Injury Lawyers Handling Coronavirus Cases Throughout Florida

For many people, embarking on a cruise is a great way to unwind and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. However, the sense of fun and adventure associated with cruise ships has dramatically changed since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic earlier this year. Passengers and crew members on more than 32 cruise ships have been infected with COVID-19, resulting in thousands of people sick, dozens of fatalities and extended quarantine stays. A Wall Street Journal investigation recently revealed that a large majority of the ships chose to continue their voyages despite being aware of the high risk to passengers and staff. Unfortunately, it seems that the quick spread of the disease was in large part due to corporate negligence.

Not only were cruise ships unprepared to provide adequate medical treatment to those who were infected, but they also failed to take the proper precautions to contain the spread of the virus. Some ships even neglected to quarantine or evacuate sick passengers. Instead, passengers were allowed to travel freely through the ship, unnecessarily spreading the infection to others. Additionally, many cruise lines were slow to report the outbreak of COVID-19 and failed to ensure timely testing of passengers.

How Can Cruise Lines Be Held Accountable for the Spread of COVID-19?

Cruise lines have a responsibility to take necessary actions to keep their passengers and crew out of harm's way, including protecting them from infectious diseases like the coronavirus. Despite the Cruise Lines International Association’s announcement on March 14 temporarily suspending U.S. operations, the industry was slow to respond to the early pandemic warnings, which fueled the spread of the virus.

Passengers and crew who have been harmed due to COVID-19 can file a lawsuit against a cruise ship operator that exhibited negligence and decided to continue with a voyage despite knowing that the individuals on board would be exposed to a contagious and potentially fatal infection.

Those in groups at a higher risk for severe illness caused by coronavirus may have even stronger arguments that their health was compromised by the decisions of cruise ship managers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that these groups may include:

  • The elderly
  • Those with underlying health conditions
  • Pregnant women
  • Those with obesity
