Drivers Beware - National Bike Month – A Time for Safety

May 15, 2023 | Category: Bike Accidents | Share

The League of American Bicyclists promotes May as National Bike Month. National Bike Month was established in 1956 to showcase the many benefits of bicycling and encourage more people to give biking a try.

2023 National Bike Month - Drivers Beware - A Time for SafetyA couple of the many events associated with National Bike Month are “Bike to Work Week 2023” which is May 15-21 and “Bike to Work Day”, Friday, May 19.

Southwest Florida is a Mecca for bicyclists, and National Bike Month festivities will encourage many more bicyclists to get out on our roadways. Fort Myers Bike Accident Attorney Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. urges drivers to be vigilant when driving to avoid catastrophic bicyclist injuries and tragic deaths, such as the following:

  • The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported on March 30, 2023, that a 62-year-old Fort Myers man tragically died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding an e-bike on McGregor Boulevard. A 74-year-old woman made a right turn into a plaza and collided with the man at 7:37 a.m.
  • A bicyclist was hit by a truck in Cape Coral on Friday, April 21, 2023. FHP reports that the bicyclist is recovering in the hospital, and there is no further information at this time.

The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) wants drivers to prevent bicycle injuries and deaths by knowing the safety facts, practicing defensive driving, and learning the rules of the road when driving around bicyclists:

NHTSA Bicycle Safety Facts

  1. Bicyclist deaths are highest during the summer months between June and September.
  2. Nearly three-quarters of all bicyclist deaths occur in urban areas.
  3. Failing to yield the right of way is the highest factor in fatal bike crashes, followed by bicyclists not being visible.

NHTSA Defensive Driving Tips

Drivers should be focused, alert to the road and traffic, and anticipate what bicyclists and other motorists may do before they do it. According to Florida law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other motorists.

According to the NHTSA, motorists should:

  • Yield to bicyclists as you would motorists and do not underestimate their speed. This will help avoid turning in front of a bicyclist traveling on the road or sidewalk, often at an intersection or driveway.
  • In parking lots, at stop signs, when backing up, or when parking, search your surroundings for other vehicles, including bicycles.
  • Drivers turning right on red should look to the right and behind to avoid hitting a bicyclist approaching from the right rear. Stop completely and look left-right-left and behind before turning right on red.
  • Obey the speed limit, reduce speed for road conditions, and drive defensively to avoid a crash with a cyclist.
  • Give cyclists room. Do not pass too closely. Pass bicyclists as you would any other vehicle — when it’s safe to move over into an adjacent lane.
