In Florida and across the United States, motor vehicle accidents involving cars, trucks, pedestrians, etc. are among the most common types of personal injury scenarios that harmed individuals and their families face year after year.

All too often, negligent and reckless drivers do not properly consider the consequences of their actions. They may tap through their cell phone to respond to a text at the wrong moment, or they may incorrectly believe that a few drinks will not have an impact on their ability to drive safely. What these drivers fail to realize, however, is that they are probably not the exception.  The statistics speak volumes about the significant danger posed by similar behaviors.

If you’ve been injured due to the negligent, reckless, or wrongful misconduct of another, Florida law may give you a right of action for damages.  We can help.  Contact Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. to get in touch with an experienced Fort Myers car accident lawyer or truck accident lawyer for guidance.

Statistics Overview

Car Accidents

According to a 2017 study conducted by the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicle Department, there were 402,385 total motor vehicle crashes involving 686,590 drivers.  Of those crashes, 272,035 involved a passenger car.  Car accidents alone led to 736 fatal injuries and 6,584 incapacitating injuries for drivers, and 267 fatal injuries and 2,409 incapacitating injuries for passengers.

Truck Accidents

The same study showed that trucks of all types posed a significant danger as well. Combined pickup truck, SUV, medium/heavy truck, and light truck statistics show that in 2017 alone, there were 620 total driver and passenger fatal injuries and 5,069 incapacitating injuries. If you or a family member were injured in an accident involving a truck or some other large commercial vehicle, contact our Fort Myers truck accident lawyer as soon as possible to discuss your rights under the law.

Pedestrian Accidents

Florida is among the worst states as far as pedestrian accidents, and the severity thereof.  In fact, the state ranks second-worst for pedestrian deaths.  In Florida, recent statistics show that 667 pedestrians were killed and 7,796 were injured in 2016, and 659 pedestrians were killed and 8,126 were injured in 2017.  Combined with Texas, California, Arizona, and New York, the state of Florida accounted for nearly half of all pedestrian-related deaths in the first half of 2017.

Bicyclists also face significant challenges, which may be indicative of a systemic problem in the design of roadways and possibly even driver education.
