Florida Ranks in Top Three States for Hit-and-Run Crashes

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAA) published a study in 2018 that showed Florida was among the top three states with the highest per capita rate of fatal hit-and-run crashes. Accidents from across the United States from 2006 to 2016 were studied. Researchers found that the highest number of fatal crashes recorded had 2,049 deaths, a 60 percent increase since 2009, which is approximately a 7 percent increase each year.

Here in Southwest Florida the media frequently reports on hit-and-run accidents.

On August 6, 2019, WINK News reported that a hit-and-run driver was arrested at work after fleeing the scene of an incident. The accident happened on the southbound entrance ramp to I-75 from Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers. A 34-year-old man was arrested when investigators determined that the right front of his 2005 Toyota struck the left rear of a 2013 BMW on the entrance ramp. The hit-and-run driver stayed at the scene briefly but then fled towards Naples.

On August 30, 2019, the News-Press reported that two cars left the scene. The hit-and-run accident closed down both lanes of U.S.41 near the Sam’s Club intersection.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), “Hit-and-run crashes are an epidemic in Florida.” Drivers are leaving the scene of hit-and-run crashes 25-40 times every day. In 2019 alone, fatal hit-and-run accidents in Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Brevard, Lake, and Volusia counties combined have doubled from this time last year.
