Get Up to Speed on Motorcycle Behavior

June 3, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants all drivers to understand motorcycle behavior before they encounter motorcycles on the road. Although it may seem reckless or crazy, motorcyclists often behave in such a way as to increase their safety.

We are sharing some of the main points with you in this blog but encourage you to click on the link here (Get Up To Speed) to learn more,” said Fort Myers Motorcycle Accident Attorney Randall Spivey.

Be Aware of Intersection Dangers.

Since 42 percent of fatal motorcycle crashes involve vehicles turning left and motorcycles going straight, passing, or overtaking a vehicle, motorists need to be careful to avoid crashes at intersections.

Know Your Vehicle’s Blind Spots.

Knowing your vehicle’s blind spots can improve the odds of avoiding collisions with motorcycles.

Stay Alert. Motorcycles Are Hard to See.

A motorcycle’s design can easily make it hidden in blind spots and difficult to see in some weather and light conditions.

Can You Spot the Motorcycle?

NHTSA says 41 percent of all motorcycle crashes are due to drivers saying they failed to notice them. They may be difficult to see:

  • In direct sunlight
  • When they blend into foliage
  • When there are bends in the road
  • In the fog and rain
  • When there is construction equipment

Be Aware of Motorcycle Braking Issues.

When motorcyclists down shift or roll off the throttle to slow down, no brake lights are illuminated to notify other drivers.

According to a statement from the NHTSA, “When motorcycles and other vehicles collide, it is usually the other (non-motorcycle) driver who violates the motorcyclist’s right-of-way. There is a continuing need to help other motorists ‘think motorcycles’ and to educate motorcyclists to be aware of this problem.”
