Watch Out fo Trick or Treaters - Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. recommends, "Watch out for trick or treaters. With an increase in pedestrian traffic, vehicle traffic, and dark neighborhoods, the potential for devastating injuries or death increases on Halloween, October 31."

The University of Michigan Transportation Institute (UMTRI) said that young pedestrians were four and a half times more likely to be killed in accidents with moving vehicles on Halloween than any other time of the year.

UMTRI Assistant Research Scientist, John Sullivan said, "This increase does not occur in daylight periods, and it is primarily restricted to children 15 and under.  This is a consequence of the special vulnerability of pedestrians at night, along with the greater than usual numbers of children out on Halloween, increasing the opportunity for an accident."

There are many distractions on Halloween evening.  Children may be dropped off in neighborhoods with parents/guardians following in moving vehicles. Watching for their own children, these drivers may not see other children and pedestrians. Children, and their guardians, also may not pay as close attention as they normally would, expecting vehicles to see them.  Cell phone use also plays a role in distracting both pedestrians and drivers.

Halloween also increases the number of parked cars, and children in their eagerness to participate in the festivities, may run between parked cars into the streets.

Many adults like to participate in Halloween by dressing up and attending Halloween parties.  When they leave the parties, they may not have "designated drivers".  Many of our local counties, Charlotte, Lee and Collier are planning DUI checkpoints to keep our area safer.

"We wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween and encourage everyone to 'Watch Out'," said Attorney Spivey.
