How Do Motorcycle Accidents Compare to Car Accidents?

August 10, 2020 | Category: Automobile Accidents, Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Motorcycles account for a disproportionate number of traffic fatalities and injuries. The Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reports that motorcycle and car accidents are similar in that they both are often caused by alcohol and/or speeding and distracted driving.

The following is a comparison of how motorcycle and car accidents are caused:

Motorcycle Accident Causes

  • Left-hand turning vehicles cause the most danger for motorcyclists. Forty-two percent of all traffic accidents which involve a car and motorcycle involves the car turning left.
  • Lane splitting is illegal in all states because it often is a contributing factor in motorcycle accidents. Should a motorcycle drive between two lanes, it would be at a higher risk of being involved in an accident because of reduced maneuverability and proximity to nearby vehicles.
  • Collisions with a fixed object caused one-quarter of motorcyclist deaths, but only 18 percent of car accidents.
  • Road hazards, such as uneven lane heights, slick roads, potholes, and other hazards, pose great threats to smaller, less stable motorcycles.

Car Accident Causes

  • Each year there are more than 11 million car accidents in the United States. These accidents are grouped into two main categories: driver error and other causes such as weather conditions, health emergencies, and tire and/or brake failure.
  • The National Safety Council (NSC) reported that 25 percent of all car accidents are related to cell phone use. This is dangerous because the brain cannot properly process information coming in from multiple sources and the driver’s reaction time is impeded.
  • Driver fatigue and falling asleep at the wheel causes between 2.5 percent and 3 percent of U.S. traffic fatalities.
  • Alcohol and/or speeding relate to nearly half of all car accidents.
  • Aggressive driving includes tailgating, disregarding traffic signals, failure to yield the right of way, and frequently changing lanes.
