July 4th - Most Common SW Florida Accidents - Spivey Law

"July 4, 2021, holiday weekend is just around the corner. This year the weekend is extended to include Monday, July 5th since the holiday falls on a Sunday. This lengthens the weekend into a 4-day weekend as many Americans begin celebrating on Friday, July 2nd. We at Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A. are familiar with the devastation caused by holiday accidents and urge everyone to put safety first. In our endeavor to make this a more enjoyable and safe holiday for everyone, we are focusing this blog on the most common July 4th accidents in Southwest Florida,” said Fort Myers Accident Attorney Randall Spivey.

Vehicle Accidents

The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that as COVID-19 immunizations have increased, the U.S. is starting to re-open. The number of miles driven in March 2021 increased 19 percent over the previous year's totals, and the number of vehicle accident deaths has also increased.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), an estimated 37.5 million people will drive 50 miles or more over the July 4th weekend. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports the holiday is the worst day of the year for fatal car accidents. Two of the major causes of crashes are speeding and drunk driving.

Speeding

The outcomes of high-speed accidents are much worse than accidents that occur at lower speeds. Braking becomes more difficult, and drivers tend to lose control when exceeding the speed limits. Vehicle occupants are subject to extensive forces causing more injuries and deaths.

Drunk Driving

Consuming alcoholic beverages is often a part of holiday festivities. However, people who enjoy this activity should not get behind the wheel and drive. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports drinking and driving resulted in approximately 113,000 deaths in the United States over the last decade. Before celebrating, choose a designated driver.

Boating Accidents

Florida is a boating Mecca in the United States, and the July 4th weekend finds many Southwest Florida boaters out on the water. The U. S. Coast Guard (USCG) urges boaters to use extra caution when boating over the holiday weekend. USCG statistics indicate that the Fourth of July accounts for a large percentage of boating accidents, injuries, and fatalities. Boaters and their passengers should always wear life jackets. Boat captains should make sure the boat is properly equipped and is prepared for emergencies. Boat operators should keep a sharp lookout for other boats, and captains and passengers should not mix boating and alcohol.
