Labor Day Weekend Safety Tips

September 4, 2020 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

Labor Day weekend 2020 starts Friday, September 4 and ends on Monday, September 7 at 12:00 a.m. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894 and is a tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and is often celebrated with parties, parades, and athletic events, according to Fort Myers Car Accident Lawyer Randall Spivey.

Labor Day Weekend Safety Tips - Ft. Myers Car Accident LawyerAn article in Business Insider says the travel itinerary app TripIt is showing that about 6 million Americans are planning to fly this Labor Day Weekend. There is an unusually high portion of those headed to Florida, among other popular states. (TripIt’s data does not include those who may travel by train, bus, or car or those who might book airplane tickets at the last minute.)

Business Insider says, “About 12% of Labor Day air travelers are headed to Florida, TripIt said, compared to 4% in 2019. Based on TripIt and previous TSA data, about 720,000 Americans will fly to Tampa, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Fort Myers, Key West, Panama City, and other parts of the Sunshine State.”

Many of the anticipated visitors to our area over the Labor Day weekend will be renting vehicles for transportation, which increases traffic for all of us. With this increase, Fort Myers Car Accident Lawyer Randall Spivey wants everyone to stay safe and is sharing some driving safety tips from the Red Cross and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

  1. Be well-rested and alert, use your seat belts, observe speed limits, and follow the rules of the road. Clean your headlights and turn them on as dusk approaches or in inclement weather.
  2. Don’t drink and drive. Have a designated driver available. As one television public service advertisement reminds us, buzzed driving is drunk driving. The NHTSA has asked states to ramp up their enforcement of NHTSA’s “Drive Sober or Be Pulled Over” campaign during the Labor Day travel weekend.
  3. Give your full attention to the road. Avoid distractions such as cell phones.
  4. Use caution in work zones. There are a lot of construction projects underway on the highways.
  5. Don’t follow other vehicles too closely.
