Life Jackets Save Lives

May 17, 2013 | Category: Boating Accidents | Share

"In our March 2013 blog More Florida Tourists - More Boating Accidents, we discussed Florida's being the national leader in annual boating fatalities and quoted statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard.  Since May 18 - May 24, 2013 is National Safe Boating Week, we feel it is our responsibility as Boating Accident Lawyers to stress the importance of wearing life jackets when boating," said Fort Myers Personal Injury Attorney.

Below are charts from the U.S. Coast Guard's Safe Boating Campaign showing 2011 Boating Casualties and 2011 Fatalities and Life Jacket Wear (the most recent available statistics).

2011 Boating Accident Casualties

The chart shows that out of 533 total drowning fatalities in 2011 - 415 people were not wearing life jackets.  This is 78% of the drowning victims.

Wearing life jackets saves lives.  On the website Saved By The Jacket, boaters are asked by the National Safe Boating Council to share their stories.  Among these stories are stories about the daughter and nephew of the Mayor of Kingston, New York who were saved from a creek during a 4th of July celebration and a non-swimmer fisherman ending up in the water during a fishing accident in Washington State.

Attorney Spivey says, "Being 'on the water' requires being responsible for everyone having and wearing life jackets.  One never knows when a boating accident may occur."
