Fall is here, and we welcome back our seasonal residents and visitors to the area.  Many of these people will be enjoying Southwest Florida's beautiful weather on the water.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard's 2012 Recreational Boating Statistics, in the United States there were 4,515 boating accidents involving 651 deaths, 3,000 injuries. 71% of the fatal boating accident victims drowned of which close to 85% were not wearing life jackets.  The most common types of vessels involved in reported accidents were open motorboats (47%), personal watercraft (1%) and cabin motorboats (15%).

"We should be safety conscious whenever on the water, even more so this busy season. It is  important that we review our boating safety preparedness and procedures," said Fort Myers Boating Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.

The American Boating Association (ABA) provides a safe boating program on their website. They encourage boaters to "…be serious about boating safety, starting with the proper kind and amount of boater training.  Remember, a boating mishap or fatality often involves innocent people who share in none of the blame, but all of the consequence."
