NHTSA Releases Its 2020 Report

February 17, 2020 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) 2020 Report shows that motor vehicle injuries constitute 99 percent of non-fatal transportation injuries and 94 percent of transportation deaths. “With yearly increases in travel and no improvement over our current safety performance, fatalities and injuries could increase by 50 percent by 2020,” said the NHTSA.

NHTSA says the challenges in the future are daunting because of the following:

  • Demographic populations, such as older and younger drivers who are over-involved in crashes, will grow significantly.
  • Aggressive driving and speeding are becoming more common with increased travel and congestion.
  • The improvements in the fatality rate have been flat for the past several years as has our progress with drunk driving.

Florida’s statewide figures for 2019, reflected only for the first six months, showed 1,643 fatal crashes statewide.

The Florida Highway Patrol reported that Lee County had more than 80 fatal crashes over the last seven years and more than 90 each year since 2015, with 113 in 2017.

“The number of fatalities and incapacitating injuries in Lee County is unacceptable. This is a direct indication of why traffic safety matters. I can’t stress enough why it is so important to practice safe and law-abiding driving behaviors when operating a motor vehicle. Simply put, it’s all about choices,” said Jay Anderson, a traffic safety professional, executive director of Stay Alive, Just Drive, and vice-chair of the Lee County Community Traffic Safety Team.
