Preventing Blind-Spot Accidents

November 9, 2018 | Category: Automobile Accidents | Share

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show nearly 840,000 blind-spot accidents occur each year in the United States, resulting in 300 fatalities. Experts agree that vehicle alert systems for detecting blind spots will significantly lower these statistics.

Preventing Blind-Spot Accidents - Spivey LawA driver alert system for blind-spot detection was first introduced on the redesign of the 2007 Volvo S80 sedan. This system produced a visible alert when a car entered the blind spot while a driver was switching lanes, using two-door mounted lenses to check the blind spot area for an impending collision. It has been eleven years since the first introduction, and blind-spot detection is a lot more common on our roads now. However, there are millions of older vehicles which do not have this safety feature. Drivers of older vehicles need to take extra precautions when driving.

What are blind spots and how to prevent accidents?

Blind spots are defined as the areas to the sides of the vehicle that cannot be seen in rear mirrors or side mirrors.

In order to prevent blind-spot accidents, experts say that drivers without the new blind-spot detection technology should:

  • Not put anything on the windows that will block the view.
  • Adjust rear-view mirrors to frame the back window.
  • Always turn and look over the shoulder to manually check for blind spots before changing lanes or backing up.
  • Add blind-spot mirrors.
  • Keep out of other drivers’ blind spots. This is especially important around large trucks.

What types of injuries occur in blind-spot accidents?

All accidents are different, and victims can walk away from blind-spot accidents without suffering any injury. This is not always the case. Victims can suffer injuries which range from minor to severe. Some of the common injuries associated with these accidents are:

  • Back and neck injuries
  • Seat belt injuries
  • Internal injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Occupant ejection injuries
