Recommendations to Reduce Fatal Motorcycle Crashes

January 27, 2020 | Category: Motorcycle Accidents | Share

Motorcycle accident fatalities are 30 percent more common than other accident fatalities, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Public and private citizen groups and organizations have been tackling and will continue to tackle, the problem of motorcycle fatalities for years.

Recommendations to Reduce Fatal Motorcycle Crashes - Spivey LawThe National Motorcycle Institute (NMI), a 501(c)(3) public charity whose mission is to reduce motorcycle crash fatalities, published its recommendations to reduce fatal motorcycle crashes in December 2019. Some of these recommendations include:

  • Metric: Governments should publish current, predicted, and the target value of Fatal Motorcycle Crashes per Million Population. When using fatal crashes per million population, this number can be compared to other related quantities, such as Fatal Motorcycle Crashes per Million Population of any particular U.S. state or any region of interest.
  • Scientific Method: Those concerned with motorcycle safety/danger should scientifically model the danger of motorcycling and the effectiveness of countermeasures. For transportation officials to develop countermeasures to the spectacular rise in motorcycle crash fatalities, NMI encourages all to learn about current, predicted, and target motorcycle danger measures and to understand how to distinguish between what is scientifically supported and what we wish to be true. Scientific evaluations of these countermeasures will lead to better countermeasures.
  • Technology: Advocate for better-engineered roadways and vehicles. Crashes are often precipitated by driver error resulting from confusion over paths of travel, changing speeds, signals, signage, surface problems, and other drivers. Roadways and vehicles can be engineered to reduce the potential for crashes and injury in the event of a crash.
  • Operator Training: Acknowledge that people respond to incentives, whether the incentives result in negative or positive fatality results. NMI recommends the separation of beginner training from receiving a motorcycle endorsement on one’s driver’s license. NMI believes the government should have responsibility for licensing to ensure that all drivers know how to operate their vehicles legally and responsibly.
