All the requirements for recertification must be completed by June 1 after the fifth year of the initial certification. Attorney Spivey received his first certification on June 1, 2001, and has been awarded a renewal every 5 years since then.

The purpose of the Florida Board Certification in Civil Trial is to identify lawyers who practice civil trial law who have the special knowledge, skills, and proficiency, as well as the character, ethics, and reputation for professionalism.

There are a number of considerations that are reviewed for qualification as a Board Certified Civil Trial Attorney, including but not limited to: the number of years experience in the practice of law, substantial involvement in the specialty of civil trial law, handling of contested cases including cases before juries as lead counsel, many hours of approved civil trial law certification continuing legal education, peer review, as well as a written examination.  Although many lawyers advertise, only certified attorneys are allowed to identify themselves as “Florida Bar Board Certified,” as a “specialist,” or as an “expert” in this area.  Certification is the highest level of recognition by the Florida Bar of competency and experience of attorneys in the area of civil trial law.  

The Florida Bar Association established the recognition of attorneys as Board Certified in 1982 to help consumers identify specialists in the areas of law approved by the Florida Supreme Court for Board Certification.  Randall L. Spivey has been evaluated for professionalism and tested for expertise to again meet the qualifications to renew his Board Certification.
