The Dangers of Rear-End Truck Crashes

January 13, 2020 | Category: Truck Accidents | Share

Rear-end truck crashes can cause victims to suffer serious injuries, even death. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reported that truck drivers caused 82 fatalities, 6,000 injuries and 17,000 cases of property damage in 2013 (latest available data). Often, these crashes turn into multi-vehicle collisions.

The Dangers of Rear-End Truck Crashes - Spivey LawTruck rear-end accidents are more dangerous than some other accidents because of the difference in weight and size of the vehicles. Large trucks can weigh 80,000 pounds or more when fully loaded. Passenger vehicles weigh less, on average 3,000 pounds.

Braking is also an issue because of size. The size of large trucks makes it difficult to slow down and suddenly stop. Multi-vehicle truck accidents are often caused by the fact that the large truck is likely to push a vehicle they rear-end into another vehicle. Because truck drivers are required to keep a safe distance from a vehicle in front of them, when rear-end crashes occur, they are often considered a truck driver’s responsibility.

Experts have found that often rear-end accidents are the result of faulty brakes, inadequate lighting, impaired driving, drowsy driving, distracted driving, speeding, and defective lights.

Florida forbids drivers from following too closely. When someone rear-ends a vehicle,   causing an accident, the driver who is in the rear will generally be liable for the accident. This falls under Florida’s rebuttable presumption.

Many of the rear-end accidents that occur on our roadways happen when truck drivers and their companies make mistakes. These mistakes include the following:

  • No routine maintenance
  • Infrequent or inadequate repairs
  • Exceeding the hours-of-service rules
  • Drunk or drowsy driving
  • Inadequate training and/or experience
  • Distracted driving by texting, etc.
  • Speeding and following too closely
