Erik Babatz, 16 years old, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a young man who decided to engage in street racing, causing a terrible crash that resulted in Erik, an innocent passenger, being killed in January 2018.

“Street racing and speeding is dangerous and illegal. Innocent people are injured and killed. This activity has to stop before more families are devastated by these negligent acts,” said Fort Myers Car Accident Attorney, Randall Spivey of Spivey Law Firm, Personal Injury Attorneys, P.A.

When Erik got his driver’s license, he made an important decision. That decision was to become an organ and tissue donor. Because of his unselfish act of passing on the gift of life, Erik was able to save the lives of five people and impact many more.

On July 16, Erik’s legacy of saving and improving lives continues through the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life artwork in the Lee County Tax Office in downtown Fort Myers was unveiled and especially dedicated to Erik at a ceremony hosted by Larry Hart, Lee County Tax Collector.

The Tree of Life is a permanent visual dedication to organ, tissue and eye donations for drivers who visit the office and staff who work there. When drivers designate their desire to be a lifesaver, they will have an opportunity to sign their name on a leaf and affix it to the Tree of Life.

By saying ‘yes’ when asked ‘Are you interested in becoming an organ donor?’ while receiving or renewing a driver’s license, customers can designate their desire to be a lifesaver. Every time a customer registers as an organ and tissue donor during a driver license transaction, they will have an opportunity to sign their name on a leaf and affix it to the Tree of Life,” according to Donate Life Florida and the county tax collector’s office.

“We urge everyone to join Erik and become an organ and tissue donor. One never knows who or when that decision will be needed and welcomed. To learn more about Donate Florida Life, please go to its website at www.donatelifeflorida.org,” said Attorney Spivey.
