On September 17, 2019, a cement truck driver was killed in a four-vehicle crash on I-75 in Marion County. The 58-year-old cement truck driver was driving north on I-75 around 1:15 p.m. when he veered onto the median and collided with the guardrail, according to state troopers responding to the accident. The truck continued into the southbound lanes into oncoming traffic and over-turned on its side. Two other vehicles veered to the right to avoid crashing into the truck, but a Honda CR-V could not avoid the crash. The CR-V hit the cement truck, and the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries.

In its video training program, FMCSA shows truck drivers how to prevent rollover accidents by

  • Avoiding sudden movements that may lead to rollovers
  • Controlling the load in turns and on straight roadways
  • Identifying high risk areas on roads
  • Remaining alert and attentive behind the wheel
  • Controlling speed and maintaining proper “speed cushions”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported in 2016 there were 4,317 people killed in crashes involving large trucks. This is a 5.4 percent increase from the previous year. Seventy-two percent of those killed in these crashes were occupants of other vehicles.
