Why Taking Good Photos at Florida Accident Scenes Is Important

Why taking good photos at FL accident scenes is importantBeing in a vehicle accident can be a traumatic experience. The actual scene is often chaotic with multiple people involved, such as the drivers, passengers, witnesses, EMTs, and the police. When accident victims suffer because of the negligence of another, they will want to seek financial compensation for their injuries and damages. Evidence quickly disappears and memories often fade. The best way to preserve evidence and memories is to take many photos.

Photos can provide:

  • Evidence of physical damage to the victim’s vehicle – Photos, particularly if they are timestamped, can prevent at-fault drivers and their insurance companies from claiming that damages were not the result of the accident.
  • Evidence of injuries – Time-stamped photos confirm the extent of a victim’s injuries from an accident. They may be used in addition to any X-rays and medical reports.
  • Evidence of fault – Florida personal injury attorneys often hire experts to assist in investigations and even testify at any potential trial. However, if it is possible, photos of the point of contact, skid marks, road conditions, vehicle positions, road debris, and stop or yield signs taken from different angles may be significant and should be taken at the accident scene at the time of the accident.
  • Witness identification – Photos of any witnesses may be helpful when an accident victim’s personal injury attorney needs to contact them for testimony regarding the accident.
  • Effects of the accident upon accident victims – Photos may also be important when accident victims are in the hospital or at home. These photos can show the effects of the accident on the victim’s life and his or her family’s lives.

When the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (FDOT) is at a vehicle accident scene, they will investigate the “How and Why.” This will involve reviewing any evidence including skid marks, tire prints, debris, fluid trails, the final resting place of the vehicles, and any victims. This is short-lived evidence, according to the FDOT, and could be moved, destroyed, or altered.
